William John Keymer (Jnr)
William John Keymer (known as Willie) was born in Kentish Town, London on 3 March 1880. He was the second child, and oldest son of William Keymer and his wife Mary Elizabeth Smith. William immigrated to New Zealand on the ship, Northumberland with his parents, grandmother Mary Ann Smith, nee Preston, and two sisters (Eliza and Louie), when he was three years old. The ship left London on 10 December 1883 and arrived in Auckland on 18 March 1884, a journey of 93 days. While enroute to New Zealand William's sister, Ada, was born.
William's parents were Government Immigrants which means they were given cheap fares by the New Zealand government to entice them to immigrate.
On arrival in New Zealand, in 1884, the Keymer family lived at 25 Ponsonby Road, in Auckland (on the right hand side, just down a bit from Karangahape Road), then moved to Brown Street (c1896), then Chamberlain Street around 1905/06, and then, around 1911, to Birkdale Road, Birkenhead, Auckland.
